About
Smidgeon Press came about when I was working on my first handmade book, back in 2007. I made the plates for the book entirely in drypoint, and when it came time to print it, it just didn’t seem right to have a book without a press imprint. After a brief hesitation while I considered the propriety of bookmaking, I scratched Smidgeon Press into the the title page plate. The traditional (ahem, correct) spelling is smidgen, or (if you’re feeling bold) smidgin. Smidgeon (like pigeon) is a deliberate misspelling, in homage to my family name: Birdsong.
My personal website serves as an easily accessible portfolio for my creative work. As I move from being a part-time student and part-time professional into being a full-time professional with part-time jobs, I wanted to have a means of updating people interested in my creative endeavors in a more flexible format. Specifically, one that can act as information source and record of what it is, exactly, I’m getting myself into – so welcome to the Smidgeon Press Blog. Here you can find test proofs for plates I’m working on, information about printmaking, and musings on the nature of art and of being an artist.
Please take a minute to visit my Smidgeon Press shop on Etsy, and support my creative endeavors by purchasing a print.

Hi Heather, I was just looking through the I Heart Art roster before I headed out to the Orientation this evening, and noticed that you’ll be there for the Chambers@916. I look forward to meeting you next Wednesday.
Drew
I will also be at the orientation this evening in fact, so I will likely see you in a couple of hours. I completely forgot to publish my blog post about it this morning, but better a little late than not at all!
Hi Heather,
I just made a “Blogs You Need To Read” side menu. and absolutely think yours is one that needs to be read. Great content and really informative.
