About
Welcome to the Smidgeon Press Blog. Here you can find sketches and test proofs for plates I’m working on, information about printmaking, and musings on the nature of art and of being an artist. I wanted to have a means of updating people interested in my creative endeavors in a more flexible format than my personal web site, and a blog seems to be the answer.
Smidgeon Press came about when I was working on my first handmade book, back in 2007. I made the plates for the book entirely in drypoint, and when it came time to print it, it just didn’t seem right to have a book without a press imprint. After a brief hesitation while I considered the propriety of bookmaking, I scratched Smidgeon Press into the the title page plate. The traditional (ahem, correct) spelling is smidgen. Smidgeon (like pigeon) is a deliberate misspelling, in homage to my family name: Birdsong.
Please take a minute to visit my Smidgeon Press shop on Etsy, and support my creative endeavors by purchasing a print – or just buy me coffee. You can also hire me for some professional services, like helping you write an artist’s statement. Learn more about that and other services here.
